Should We Return to a Stone Age Diet?
Humans have not always eaten the way we do today. Fast food drive-thrus, supersized burritos, and restaurants that place heaping bowls of bread on the table before the meal even begins would have shocked the Stone Age humans right into their graves! Sadly, this type of diet is shocking many modern day bodies right to our graves as well.
As heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and hypertension run rampant through every country on the globe, should we all return to a Stone Age diet?
Understanding the Stone Age Diet
In the early days of human life, you ate whatever came natural to the Earth. You scavenged for berries and fruits growing on trees and bushes as well as nuts, seeds, and grains. While just collecting those essentials took up a lot of time, men often spent weeks at a time hunting down meat, since cows and other animals were not gathered on large farms for them.
Cooking methods were extremely simple and did not involve adding a lot of extra fat, salt, and sugar. People living in the Stone Age enjoyed the natural flavors of their food and found it quite satisfying.
The Stone Age Diet Today
Mimicking the Stone Age diet in our modern times would not mean hunting and collecting your own food from the wild, but it would mean sticking with foods that are plentiful on our planet. It would mean selecting fresh fruits and vegetables grown without pesticides and other chemicals over processed foods.
It would also mean eating a mix of fresh foods and small portions of meat without adding a lot of extra fat. Since hunting down meat was such a labor intensive endeavor in the Stone Age, people back then tended to eat much less of it than we do today. This likely explains why they did not suffer with rampant heart disease as we do today.
Basically, a Stone Age diet today would be very similar to a whole foods diet, where natural growing foods are eaten in their natural state with very little processing or cooking.
Exercise and the Stone Age Diet
If you were listening to how food was collected in the Stone Age you probably realized that they spent most of their days moving their bodies in very active ways. They could not sit around for long if they wanted to eat, so they were always out looking for food. For hunting men, they were believed to go for days without eating just to bring home the meat for their families.
We no longer live such active lives today, which is why we have to develop complex machinery such as treadmills which would have seemed quite useless in the Stone Age! Whether you are following a Stone Age diet or not, exercise is extremely important. If you don’t have to hunt for your food, you have to burn off excess calories in some other way.
Returning to the Stone Age diet in our modern world might seem silly, considering food is more readily available and most of us can afford to eat whatever we want. Yet, you have to stop and think about what we are doing to our bodies by living with our current dietary patterns. It may be well worth consideration for anyone ready to live a healthier, longer life.
