Should We Be Eating Organic Food?

Eating organically is all the rage right now and perhaps for good reason. Whether it’s the latest trend or not, however, the more educated the consumer, the easier the decision will be. Let’s outline the pros and cons of making the switch from conventionally produced food to organically produced food to get started.

Pros of going organic:

- Morally speaking, organically produced food ensures that animals involved are usually treated with a higher degree of care. From their food to their living conditions, cows and chickens, for example, are for the most part housed “free-range”, or, without pens and/or cages.

- Hydrogenated fat tends to be apparent more in conventionally produced foods than in organically produced foods. Because of the direct correlation to heart disease, one of the leading killers in modern society, it’s advantageous to avoid it by going organic.

- Crops produced organically do not require the use of as many chemicals as conventionally produced crops. For this reason, going organic is generally better for the environment.

Cons of going organic:

- In today’s economy, it may not be practical to buy organically produced food, as it’s typically more expensive.

- Foods produced organically may spoil more quickly because the use of preservatives is usually forbidden in their production.

- There are some independent and comparative global studies that have shown while many organically produced foods may have a higher nutritional value than conventionally produced foods, the difference is negligible.

While it seems a toss up, perhaps the ideal solution is not to make an all encompassing, absolute decision. After all, there are definitive benefits of some organic foods as opposed to others as a whole. For example, consider simply buying organically produced meat, as doing so will not only help support the humane treatment of livestock, but will also help reduce the impact on the environment in livestock production.

Whatever your decision, it’s wise to take into consideration both the logical and ethical reasons for going organic. After surveying the options for your area, who knows? Perhaps the simplest solution is to supplement your grocery shopping with a few choice organically produced products. Indeed, that just may be the key to having your chemical-free cake, and eating it too.
