What is a Safe Amount of Fat to Lose Per Week?

No one likes to carry a large amount of fat on their frame. That is why they take the steps to drop weight and when they do they want to lose as much weight as humanly possible. Some people would prefer to drop upwards of 10lbs in a week. But, is this safe? No, and not only is not safe it is not very feasible either. It is next to impossible to drop an excessive amount of weight in a week. Some may try but they risk harming their bodies in a number of ways. This does raise questions regarding what is or is not a safe amount of weight one can lose in a week.

In general, it is safe (and feasible) to lose about 1lb – 2lbs per week. One pound of stored body fat is the equivalent of 3600 stored calories. (That means 2lbs would be 7200 calories) That is an enormous amount of calories to eliminate per week either through exercise or cutting food out of the diet. 2lbs in one week would require burning 1,000 calories per day for a full week. Crunching the proverbial numbers, 10lbs of fat eliminated per week would mean cutting out/burning 5,000 calories a day! That is just flat out impossible as you could never diet that many calories a day and you would have to job upwards of 10 miles per day every day for a week to get near that level. The body would never be able to do this and the metabolism would shut down.

But, what about all those diets that claim to be able to shed 7lbs per week right off the bat? Honestly, it is mostly water weight that these people lose. Extremely heavy people that cut out a lot of really bad food may experience a 5lb weight loss merely because their original weekly intake was off the charts. For the average person, 1lb or 2lbs of fat per week is both feasible and attainable.

Simply cutting 500 calories out of the diet per day will yield the elimination of one pound of stored fat in a week. This can be achieved by a combination of diet and exercise. If you want to speed up your fat loss, cardio exercise will aid in burning off a ton of stored fat – within a reasonable amount. Over time, a 10lb weight loss will occur. Really, there is no reason to be impatient for the weight loss because it will occur eventually. Time waits for no one so don’t sweat it if you want to drop a lot of weight. It will come off over time.
