What Should I Eat at a Restaurant When I’m on a Diet?
Just because you are on a diet does not mean you should not enjoy a night out at your favorite restaurant. Tailoring your night out often depends on the particular diet you have chosen. However, that does not mean that you can’t stick to your diet when dining out.
One way to help you stay on track it so preview the menu of the restaurant you have chosen before you arrive. Many restaurants allow you to view their menu online and if online viewing is not available, you can always call and request that a menu be faxed to you. Previewing the menu allows you to pre-plan what you will order once to get to the restaurant.
Another helpful tip to help you avoid crashing your diet is to eat a small snack before going out to dinner. Eating an apple or some type of fruit will help you control your hunger. You should also drink plenty of water before and during your meal.
Once you get to the restaurant, you should start your meal by ordering a soup or salad before your entree. You should avoid soups that are cream based, as these types of soups are high in fat and calories. If you decide to forgo the soup and order the salad instead, request that the dressing be kept on the side. Ordering a soup or salad before a meal is very filling and you will be less tempted to over indulge when ordering the entree.
Once you have finished the soup or salad, it’s now time to decide what to order for the main course. An important tip to remember is to avoid foods that are fried, breaded, or that have butter or cream in them. Now that you are knowledgeable to this tip, there are two ways to approach this part of the meal. The first option is to order off the appetizer menu for your main dish. Appetizers are often served in smaller portions and usually cost less, which means you not only will be reducing the number of calories but the amount of money you spend as well.
If you decide that you prefer to order off the main entree menu, remember the tip above to avoid foods that are fried, breaded, and that are high in fat and cholesterol. Poultry, fish, or red meat should be baked, steamed, broiled or some other method that helps to reduce the amount of fat. As with any diet, portion control is extremely important. Eat half of your meal and request to have the remaining half wrapped-up to take with you or you can always share your entree with our dinner companion.
