The Negative Calorie Diet is a strange guide, it makes lots of claims that the foods you will be eating help you to burn more calories digesting them that you get from eating them, but then proceeds to list all sort of vegetables, fruits and seafood which I have never heard of having a negative calorie effect.

Also throughout the book claims are made about lots of things which can speed up your metabolism, but no scientific studies are quoted to back up those claims or the claims about the food.

Basically the diet revolves around a 7 day process of eating nothing but an onion soup which to be fair is fortified with lots of different ingredients to make it fairly healthy. But asking you to live on that for 7 days with just vegetables and fruit (a small amount of meat on days 5,6 and 7) will cause a massive calorie deficit which will lead to muscle loss.

The claims of losing up to 3lbs of weight per day mean it must be mostly muscle and water loss with some fat as well.

It does encourage healthy eating after the 7 days of eating soup and tells you how to cut down on some of the fats we eat and encourages you to eat from the list of foods the author gave, which if you ignore the claims about the negative calorie effect is actually a healthy list of foods which would be good to consume.

But to me it is too much of a fad diet which gets you to consume soup instead of proper meals for a week to give you the impression you are losing lots of fat when infact it is probably just muscle and water which you’ll put back on quickly as soon as you start eating normally again.
