How to Choose a Diet You Won’t Give Up On

There are so many different diets out there, and most of them will do as they promise and help you to lose weight if you stick to them, so what makes one more successful than another?

I think one factor has to be how easy the diet is, and another is how much of a lifestyle change it is rather than a short period of starving yourself and then you are left on your own.

Let’s start with how easy it is to follow first. Diets nowadays like to be complicated, they use exact ratios of macronutrients and you have to eat 6 meals a day and all sorts. Ok maybe the author feels that is the absolutely best way to lose the most amount of weight, but who can really eat 6 meals a day? What happens if you have kids, do you miss out eating with them just to follow your diet?

Anything that complicates your life more and requires you to put a lot more effort into something which before was easy, just isn’t going to stick, you are not going to be able to follow it for more than a few weeks at best. The same goes for a diet that is too restrictive, you just won’t stick to it.

That leads us onto the second factor I gave, how much of a lifestyle change is it? You see we all have habits which we stick to like glue, and the only way to change them is to do it gradually, and to stick to the new habits for at least a month, that helps to ingrain it into our psyche.

Which means these diets that force you to radically change your diet for 2 weeks then stop, well afterwards you are just going to go back to how you were eating which is what made you put on the weight you want to lose! So you end up putting everything back on and probably more!

I know that those types of diets usually tell you to repeat the cycle until you get to your target weight, but if they are too severe for that period of time then you don’t learn anything about healthy eating which you can apply to your life later on. I’d much prefer a diet which teaches you how to change the way you eat permanently so you can start to lose weight and be healthier for the rest of your life.

Think about these things the next time you go to choose a diet to follow and hopefully you’ll find one you can stick to and have more success with.
