Do I Need to Detox?

Detoxing is all the rage at the moment and many people swear that afterwards they feel better than they ever have and that they start to naturally gravitate towards healthy foods, it is not a chore anymore but something their body craves.

Whether you believe in the effectiveness of a detox or not then you have to admit we put a huge amount of chemicals into our body on a daily basis now. If any of those are getting trapped in our colon or our fat cells, then after decades of doing that a good flush out may do us the world of good.

And it doesn’t matter if you try and eat healthily anymore, pesticides on food, second hand smoke as you walk down the street, even the chemicals in your drinking water can all work to clog your system up no matter what you do.

So what are the symptoms that show you need a detox? Well often people report that things like joint pain which they have just accepted as something they have to live with, will go away after a detox, so often it is really hard to spot what could be caused by toxins in our body. That’s why if you haven’t ever done a detox then maybe you should just try one and then see what symptoms go away!

These are some common symptoms that could show you need to detox your body

- Arthritis or joint pain
- Depression or anxiety
- Chronic respiratory or sinus problems
- Poor digestion or excess acid
- Food allergies
- Sudden memory lapses
- Constipation, diarrhea or gas
- Bad breath
- Insomnia and fatigue
- Frequent headaches
- Skin problems

These could all be messages from your body as it seeks relief from pollutants, maltreatment and poor nutrition. So how do you go about detoxing?

Well first I’d speak to a naturopath to see what they suggest you need to detox and how, then I’d run it past your doctor just to make sure there aren’t any unseen complications with the plan they proposed for you. Then you need to follow their instructions, you could just be detoxing one part of your body like your liver, or you could be flushing out your whole system, it depends on what your symptoms are, but you need to stick with it and follow their instructions if you want to get the full benefit.

Or you could go to an intensive detox program where they keep you there for a week or so and they have doctors and nutritionists on hand to look after you as you totally cleanse your entire system. It is often quite intense and not very fun, but hey clearing out decades of junk in just a week is not going to be easy!
