What is the Lemonade Diet?

The lemonade diet that people talk about is actually called the Master Cleanse or sometimes the Lemonade Cleanse and is actually a system designed to detox your body and clear out all the old debris from your colon, it is not designed to help you lose weight like some people think it is. It was first developed by Stanley Burroughs in 1941 and has developed a strong following since then from people who claim it gives all sorts of benefits.

The basic idea is that you abstain from eating any food for the period of the cleanse, typically 10 days in length, and you just drink a concoction of freshly made lemonade using real lemons, cayenne pepper and grade B maple syrup. You also drink laxative solutions (saltwater or laxative teas) to help stimulate bowel movements each morning and evening.

This is supposed to remove years of old fecal matter stuck in your colon which stops you getting all the nutrients out of any food you eat, as well as storing toxins that should be expelled from your body. In fact colon cleansing has become a hot topic recently and some of the pictures and claims people make about the quantity of material that comes out are quite extraordinary.

I have heard time and time again that after ‘detoxifying’ and cleaning out their colon then people feel much better, less sluggish, they eat more healthily as well, whether that is from changes in your body or just a desire to look after your newly cleansed system then it is reported often enough to be considered a real effect of cleansing, but is this really the best way to cleanse your body?

The fact this is now known as a ‘diet’ is ludicrous – the only weight loss you will experience is from essentially fasting for the 10 days, which will cause muscle and water loss as well as fat loss, and of course emptying your colon as well which will have a positive effect when you step on the scales, at least until you fill it up again afterwards!

I would be concerned with the fact that the diet provides minimal nutrients for the period of the cleanse, but does load your body up with sugar every time you drink that mixture laced with maple syrup! Most detoxifying programs make you fast completely, or drink vegetable juices etc which means your body can maintain a reasonably stable blood sugar level, but with this cleanse then you will be spiking your blood sugar constantly during the day causing a massive insulin reaction from your body every time you do it.

So if you do want to try the Master Cleanse then please sit down with your doctor first and discuss it with them before you start!
