Weight loss after pregnancy may be a bit harder than normal, but it is definitely possible. The most important thing to remember is to take your time and keep health in mind. Just as proper nutrition and physical fitness was extremely important during pregnancy, it is equally as important following pregnancy. Not only will a healthy diet and physical fitness help you stay energized to keep up with your new baby, it will also help you shed those unwanted pounds.
The first step to help rid your body of extra baby weight is to watch what you eat. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grain foods should make up a good part of your diet. These foods pack a ton of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, but also contain a good deal of fiber. Foods that are high in fiber help to keep you feeling full longer, which will keep you from reaching for extra snacks. Low fat dairy products, lean protein (such as poultry, fish, pork, and lean cuts of beef), and beans are also quite beneficial. These foods contain good amounts of iron, protein, B vitamins, and zinc. Try to keep junk food out of the house, so that you are not tempted to snack.
In addition to watching what you eat, you should also watch how much you eat. Portion control is essential to any weight loss plan. Instead of skipping meals try cutting back on portions, and increase your consumption of fruits and vegetables. It is also important to eat only when you are hungry and not when you feel stressed, nervous, or anxious. If you are feeling emotional, try a physical activity such as taking your baby for a walk, taking a bubble bath, or calling a friend. Do not reach for the ice cream or cookies; this will sabotage your diet.
When your doctor gives you permission to resume physical activity, a fitness program should be started. It is important to begin slowly with light aerobic workouts. Walking, bicycling, swimming, stretching, and jogging are great options. Try to avoid any rough exercises, or any activities that cause a jarring effect. A great way to stick with a routine is to take your baby with you. Walking or jogging while pushing a stroller only adds to the workout. Try laying your baby on the floor next to you while stretching or performing aerobics. Your baby will get a kick out of watching you, and you will be able to bond with your little one while getting some exercise.
