Are You Eating Because You’re Bored?
Are you eating because you’re bored? If you are one of the millions of people that find themselves eating in front of the television, snacking while at work, or wandering into the pantry continually and mindlessly munching, you fit into the category of a “bored eater”. You do not need to continue this bad habit, there are ways to modify your behavior, lose those extra pounds, and gain some new interests. Below are some tips to help you succeed.
Take Up A New Hobby: Consider joining a craft group, a sports team, a book club, or other similar group. This will get you out of the house, away from temptation, and will give you something to do to help keep your mind off eating. You will meet new people, learn new skills, and maybe even get some exercise. Also, if you take up an activity that keeps your hands busy, you will not be able to eat.
Talk To Someone: Call a friend or family member to chat. You will connect with someone, and you will not be thinking about food. If you have a friend who is also trying to lose weight, make them your weight loss buddy and you can both benefit from the distraction.
Drink More Water: Water can make your body feel full, and help fend off the urge to snack. Spice up your water by serving it in a pretty glass, or adding a slice of citrus. If you do not like plain water, try a warm cup of tea.
Go For A Walk: Take your dog for a walk, push your baby in the stroller, call up a friend to walk with you, or just take a hike. Getting out for a walk helps to clear your head and reduces stress. On top of that you will be getting more exercise, which helps burn calories.
Chew Gum: Chewing gum can trick your body into thinking you are eating something, without adding all of the extra fat and calories. Mint flavors are especially helpful at curbing food cravings.
Try Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy can be quite soothing for the mind and the body. Light candles, incense, or use a light mist that is scented with apples and/or vanilla. These two scents have been proven in studies to reduce people’s appetite.
Get Rid of Bad Snacks: If you do not have diet wrecking foods in the house, you cannot eat them. Substitute chips, cookies, and other treats for fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, non-fat or reduced fat dairy, and lean protein. When you only have healthy things to snack on, you will find yourself eating better, and eating less often.
