How To Develop The Mental Power To Stay On That Diet
By the end of this week over 6 million Americans will have started a diet. And according to a recent study, about half of that 6 million will end the diet, before they even gave themselves a chance to finish it. So the question becomes, “How to develop the mental power to stay on that diet?” For millions of American the simple thought of losing weight and becoming more attractive is enough motivation, however, that usually is not enough power to get most people through the grueling stages of a diet. This article will go over a few ways to develop the mental power to stay on a diet.
The old adage of “mind over matter” is a good thing to remember when trying to stay the course of a new diet. Many people get overwhelmed by the shear length of a diet, but if you just take simple steps, it becomes much easier to manage. Take your diet and break it up into little parts. Take the foods that your will need to consume and learn to appreciate them. Understand that they will now become a part of your everyday diet. Become friends with the food you will be eating, and distance yourself from the foods you will not be eating. While this may sound a little silly, it actually works. You must literally think of your new food groups as new friends. Introduce yourself to a brand new way of eating, and say goodbye to your old ways.
Another way you can develop the mental power to stay on that new diet is to consult family and friends. The best way to stay on course of a diet is to have a family member or a friend go on that diet with you, and stick around for the duration of the diet. When one of you is feeling like cheating, simply call the other one up and talk to them. The buddy system works great for diets in which you must exercise because you can setup a work out routine with that other person. Finding another person that is just as dedicated as you to start and finish the diet is one the easiest ways to ensure you will get through it.
All of your friends and family are absolutely perfect, and don’t need to diet (highly unlikely)? Then contacting a dietitian or nutritional specialist is a great way to keep you body and mind focused throughout your diet. Seeing this person once a week, or even once a month is a great way to keep you on track. They will let you know if you are doing the right things, or if you are slipping a little bit. Be honest with this person, as they are only there to help and not judge you.
Developing the mental power to stay on a diet all starts with your commitment to that diet. If you are not committed to staying true to the diet, then you are already putting yourself at a disadvantage. Make sure you are physically and mentally ready to start a diet before starting one.
