Fad Diets: Why They Are So Bad For You
For anyone that has attempted to start a diet you know it can be a grueling process just to find the right diet. And with so many fad diets around these days, who can be sure that they are even legit. Should you go on the south beach diet, lemonade diet, or how about the peanut butter diet? There are literally hundreds of fad diets out there, but what many people don’t know about these diets is they are actually bad for you in the long run. Sure, you may lose a few pounds, but the majority of these diets are unnatural, unhealthy, and just plain bad for you. This article will go into the three biggest reasons why most fad diets are so bad for you and your body.
Fad diets cut corners. And by cutting corners they are leaving your health in the dust. When you start a diet (a real diet) your body type is analyzed by a professional and you are given a plan to follow that includes eating schedules, sleeping schedules, work out regiments, foods to avoid, and foods to eat. This plan is usually pretty intense, but it works. It may take a few months or more to see any results at all, but you will lose weight, and you will feel better about yourself. Fad diets, unfortunately, focus only on the food aspect of the diet, and usually only tell you what to eat and what not to eat. Well how about when to eat? By leaving out important dietary details fad diets cut corners and you lose.
Another reason fad diets are so bad for you is because most of them do not include a balanced diet, which is key in a nutritious diet. Many of these fad diets are bad for you because they tell you to eat only a specific kind of food, or even worse, avoid a certain type of food altogether. For example, the Atkins diet, quite possibly the most popular fad diet of all time focused on a low carbohydrate diet. Atkins engraved in dieters minds that carbohydrates were the enemy, when in fact carbohydrates are necessary for a balanced diet. Of course you should be eating bread, eggs, and cheese all day long, but according to the Atkins diet you were forbidden from eating hardly any carbohydrates, and anytime you did it was considered “cheating.”
Many people choose to go on these fad diets because they hear from friends and family that it was a great diet and they lost a ton of weight on it. Well, starving yourself will also cause you to lose weight, it doesn’t mean it is a healthy way to do it. If you are serious about starting a diet, I strongly encourage you to contact your local dietitian and do some serious research before starting one of these fad diets. Remember, they are called fad diets because they do not last, you will lose weight, but there are plenty of other healthier options you can go with.
