Can I Use Acupuncture For Weight Loss?

Acupuncture is an ancient treatment that has been used for thousands of years. From common mild ailments, to severe medical issues, people have used this treatment with varying amounts of success. Because of this, many people wonder: Can I use acupuncture for weight loss?

The practice of acupuncture uses long, thin, sterilized, stainless steel needles that are inserted into one or many of the over two thousand pressure points on the body. This therapy began in Japan and Korea, but the most commonly used method around the world today is the form that was perfected by the Chinese.

The Chinese method believes that the body is made up of two opposing forces called the yin and the yang. The yin is the cold and reflexive portions of the mind, body, and spirit, while the yang is the hot, and energetic areas. These two portions of the body need to be balanced so that the qi (the life’s energy) can flow through the meridian paths. Acupuncture places needles at many different points along the meridian paths to encourage the qi to flow properly.

Because of the different areas the needles are placed, people undergoing treatment often report feeling energized, or very calm. It is thought that these effects are due to the regulation of the nervous system, which is precisely why many believe that acupuncture for weight loss is possible.

When undergoing acupuncture treatments to help with weight issues, needles are typically inserted into the ear area. In most cases, the acupuncturist will insert five needles into the ear, one for each relaxation point that corresponds to the lungs, liver, kidneys, and nervous system. It is believed that each of the five needles causes endorphins to release, which make a person feel good. This is supposed to help reduce cravings for carbohydrates, as well as decrease the appetite.

A recent study found that women who had body mass indexes of over 27 who regularly used proper diet and exercise methods lost more weight when adding acupuncture than women who only used diet and exercise.

There are many fans of using acupuncture for weight loss. While many claim it works, they often disagree as to why. Some people do not believe its weight loss potential has nothing to do with the five pressure points, and believe it works by reducing stress levels, which causes people to feel better and lowers the chances of compulsive eating. Others believe that it reduces pain, which allows people to get moving and keep exercising.

If you do decide to try acupuncture for weight loss, always check with your health care professional. There are few known risks associated with this treatment when used for weight loss (a mild tingling sensation at insertion point is the most common side effect), so it may be a worthy (but expensive) addition to your current diet and exercise program.
