Can I Use Laxatives For Weight Loss?
Laxatives often come in many different forms, from food sources to drug sources; these items can be taken orally or in suppository form. Some may even come in the form of “slimming teas”, but the one thing that remains constant is that using laxatives for weight loss is dangerous.
Laxatives are typically taken to help to stimulate bowel movements to help rid the body of undigested foods that may be clogging the digestive tract. These aids should only be used occasionally, or as directed by a physician, when needed to help with constipation, never for weight loss.
The process of digestion causes the small intestines to absorb fats and nutrients from food. Once the food has been utilized by the small intestines, all fats and calories have been removed, and it is then moved into the large intestines. Laxatives only work in the large intestines by causing the intestinal muscles to contract and remove the bodily waste from the body. Therefore, using laxatives for weight loss is futile since laxatives only expel used waste, and not any fat or calories.
Some people insist that you can lose weight by taking laxatives because they mistake the feeling of emptiness for actual weight loss. This gives the sensation of being thin, but does not actually remove any unused food or fat from the body.
What does happen is that people who abuse laxatives for weight loss purposes tend to become addicted. What starts off as every so often use, leads to dependency that only grows the more these drugs are used. Once the process begins, the normal bodily functions become disrupted and people cannot have a normal movement without the supplements any longer. Individuals who suffer from anorexia or bulimia are more likely to abuse laxatives.
Here are some facts about using laxatives to help lose weight: Laxatives only expel waste and water from the body, which can lead to dehydration and mineral deficiencies; use of laxatives can be painful, especially if you do not eat enough food to keep up with the movements; loss of needed fluids, vitamins, and minerals can lead to an electrolyte imbalance, which can cause muscle pain, muscle spasms, dizziness, and potentially fatal renal failure.
Do not be fooled by products claiming to offer “safe laxatives for weight loss” on the package. There is no such thing; using laxatives in this manner can be quite dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.
