Overcoming a Weight Loss Plateau
Have you hit the point where the numbers on your scale never seem to change? Has this been the case for the last several weeks? If so, you have hit a weight loss plateau. As frustrating as this can be, it does not mean it is time to give up and toss your diet aside. Here are a few simple tips for overcoming a weight loss plateau.
One of the first things that need to be addressed when overcoming a weight loss plateau is cheating. You need to be completely honest with yourself and determine whether or not you are sneaking snacks, resorting to past bad behavior, or mindlessly eating. When you are having a stressful day, do you comfort yourself with a treat? Are you considering everything you consume, including sodas, hard candies, even tastes of food while cooking? One of the best ways to track your true intake is to keep a food journal. This will help you identify behavior patterns and gain a true assessment of daily calories.
Next, it is important to give yourself some leeway, and do not beat yourself up. Stick with your plan, but make sure you are not completely depriving yourself. Feeling deprived usually sets the stage for a binge and will only add to the problem. You should try to refrain from eating as much junk food, or high calorie foods as possible, however it is all right to indulge in a treat once in a while, but only in moderation.
Every once in a while, absolutely no more than once a week, or once every couple of weeks, eat something “forbidden” from your diet. This does not mean to sit down and eat ten hamburgers, French fries, and a large chocolate milk shake. However, having one small hamburger, or a small order of fries, or a small chocolate shake every so often can make the pounds start to come off again. Eating something a little heavier than usual can give your metabolism a bit of a boost, which kicks the calorie burning process into overdrive.
Finally, change your workout routine. Adding an extra element, especially adding the use of weights, to your daily exercise regimen can really get your metabolism pumping. If you usually take a daily walk, try adding ankle weights and see if your scale does not start to move once again. You do not need to purchase fancy equipment, or join a gym. Making a few simple changes can put you on the right path to overcoming a weight loss plateau in no time.
