The question of “Are fad diets nutritional enough” is a question that cannot be answered easily. In fact, the whole topic of dieting can be considered malnutritious, to a certain extent. However, if done properly, dieting can be a very good thing. It can help you lose weight, improve self esteem, and improve your overall health. But some of the downsides to dieting, and particularly fad dieting, is that followers of these fads do not do enough research on the diet itself. Instead, they take their friends and families word for it. In part, because they themselves were successful with the diet, but also in part because these diets having been gaining popularity as a quick fix to lose weight. The truth is there is no quick fix to losing weight, unless of course, you want to go under the knife.
Fad diets have been around for a long time, but have gained momentum in the past few years due to the high number of diets coming about. One diet in particular that has gained the most popularity in the past few years is the south beach diet. This diet focuses on eating good carbs and fats such as seafood, vegetables, and lean meats. The south beach diet’s nutritional value has been put under the microscope and it seems that eating a high protein, low fat diet such as this can actually be harmful for your heart. A similar diet, in terms of popularity, the Atkins diet took the nation by storm a few years ago when Dr. Atkins published his book by the same name. This diet is concerned with leaving out most high carb foods, and concentrating on high protein foods such as eggs. The problem with this diet is that it promotes weight loss through the unhealthy consumption of high protein foods, which leaves the diet unbalanced and not nutritious.
Many of these diets that you hear about have not been researched, and are simply concoctions that you drink. One that comes to mind is the lemonade diet. This diet consists of a very strict regiment of consuming a mixture of water, lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper right before every meal. And some people insist of only consuming this concoction, and do not eat for up to two weeks! I do not think I have to explain why this is unhealthy. But again, I have personally seen people that go on these diets and lose weight, sometimes a considerable amount of weight. But the question here is not, “Do fad diets make you lose weight”, the question is, “Are fad diets nutritious enough.” If you are looking for an easy way out, and a diet that will help you lose a few pounds, but isn’t necessarily the healthiest thing for you, then you should go with one of the many fad diets out there.
While these fad diets may help you lose weight, the bottom line is that they are not a healthy way to lose weight. If you are serious about losing weight, I suggest you contact a professional dietitian, and do a little bit of research about dieting before you start anything.
