How Long Will It Take Me To Lose Weight?
Just about everyone who starts a diet wants to know: How long will it take me to lose weight? Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all answer to that question. There are several things that determine a person’s ability to lose weight because each person is different. Each person has a different metabolism, different body mass, different caloric needs, and different mind-set.
A good rule of thumb to help determine how long it will take to drop those excess pounds is to plan on losing about two pounds per week. This is a very realistic, and attainable goal. In order to achieve this, you will need to reduce or burn approximately 1,000 calories each week.
This can be done by cutting your caloric intake, but ideally should be done by reducing calories and getting more physical exercise. Every 3,500 calories equals one pound of body weight. You should assess the total number of calories you consume each week, and reduce that number accordingly. Keep in mind calorie intake should never drop below 1,250 calories per day.
Another factor to help answer the question of “how long will it take me to lose weight” is personal attitude. Individuals who abruptly decide to go on a diet, or decide to drop a few pounds to fit into their favorite jeans will usually be disappointed with the long-term results. These people typically do not see immediate results, then decide it is not worth the effort, and give up.
Those who are able to change their attitudes to understand that weight loss takes time and needs to be a life long process, tend to make more progress and stick with the program. Dietary changes and exercise routines should always be introduced gradually, and given enough time to take effect. When you are able to change your habits, examine your lifestyle, and exercise a bit of patience, you will be more committed to the process and more likely to stay focused.
Finally, it is extremely important to set reasonable goals. The number one reason most diets fail is because people set unreasonable, and unreachable goals. Diet results are never instantaneous and changes to your entire lifestyle need to be developed for the long-term. Rather than continually asking yourself “how long will it take me to lose weight”, change that question into a statement: “It will take me…” and fill in the blanks with a simple task.
By setting reasonable goals that you can achieve, such as losing one to two pounds every two weeks, walking for thirty minutes a day, and giving up your favorite junk food, you will feel more positive about yourself and your results.
