Intro: Today we are looking at dill weed which is a perennial weed that originated from the Mediterranean and the South of Russia. There is archaeological evidence from Switzerland to suggest this herb has been cultivated as far back as the Neolithic period (9500BC) so the properties of this herb have been known and enjoyed since what was technically the Stone Age!

The seeds are probably the most commonly used part of this plant and they can be added to dishes as a spice, they are supposed to be similar in taste to caraway. The leaves are also used to add flavor to dishes though and they are a common addition to dishes like Borscht in Romania, and even making pickled cucumber. An oil can also be extracted from the leaves and seeds of this plant and as the plant is known to have a carminative effect then the oil may be used to help ease intestinal bloating and trapped gas etc.
