Intro: Today we look at my favorite kind of soup, a chunky one with lots of meat and vegetables in, not a watery one like we looked at yesterday. By combining meat and vegetables then you get a good range of vitamins and minerals along with the protein from the meat, and obviously it makes it taste good too. This isn’t a creamy soup though, the thick paste that the ingredients are contained in is usually made from something like vegetables stock for taste, mixed in with wheat flour and/or potato starch, it varies from brand to brand but that is the general idea, and that gives a lovely thick paste to make it into a soup.

There is so much variation between the brands though that really you need to check the label on any can of soup you plan to buy, for instance the one below seems quite healthy as it has almost as much protein as it does carbs, so it probably doesn’t use flour as a thickener. You also need to look for fresher soups that don’t use lots of preservatives to give them a long shelf life, typically they will be in cartons as opposed to tins, and they are more expensive, but I think it is worth it in the long run to avoid eating unnecessary chemicals.
