Serving size analysed: 150g, 1 cup

Intro: Trail mix is a bag of dried fruit and nuts which was intended to provide sustenance while you are out hiking. The fruit will give you a quite boost of energy from the natural sugars in it, while the nuts will give you lasting energy from the fat and protein they contain. It was thought up around the middle of the 20th century, although it is hard to pinpoint who first thought of this mixture as the perfect energy food.

There is no single ‘correct’ mixture of ingredients for this food, everywhere seems to have their own version of it. For instance some people add chocolate chips to it to add flavor and presumably add some more sugar to it for fast energy, other people add shredded coconut, ginger, pretzels etc, but the main bulk of trail mix is made up of all different kinds of nuts and dried fruit.

You can see below that it contains a lot of fat and carbohydrates and a good dose of protein, along with a lot of minerals, although surprisingly few vitamins considering the fruit which it contains.
