Intro: A pretzel is a stick of dough which has been twisted into the typical looped pretzel shape and then covered with whatever glazes or additions people think will taste nice (salt crystals are popular). They can be hard or soft depending on how they are made, and range in size from ones like little potato chips (which tend to be hard and are very moreish so you can’t stop eating them) through to huge ones up to about 10 inches across. The large ones are excellent for dipping into sauces, you just bite part of the loop off and then you have one end you can dip into the sauce as you eat it.

The history of this snack is uncertain, but some people believe they date back as far as 610AD and originate from Italy, although it is hard to find any evidence to back that up.

Nutritionally then they are mostly made up of carbohydrates and water, but they do contain a good assortment of minerals too.
