Intro: We’ve looked at corned beef before when we looked at a corned beef brisket and we said that while most people would assume this is a blend of corn and beef, then in fact the ‘corn’ part refers to corns of salt which are used to cure and preserve the meat. Today we are looking at the tinned version which means they cure the meat using salt and then they mince it all up and put it into a can in a big block and seal it.

The advantage of this is that not only is the meat cured which is good for preservation, but the tin also helps to preserve the meat, so you will find they have an extremely long shelflife (I just checked a tin and it was 5 years in the future). That makes it an important source of protein in times of disaster.

It is also a versatile ingredient, you can have it in sandwiches, stews, soups, mix it in with potatoes, in fact it really is just a block of salty meat so you can do pretty much anything with it that you could with a slab of normal meat! Nutritionally then apart from the high salt content it is just a regular piece of meat with a smattering of vitamins and minerals in, although it does seem to be relatively high in selenium.
