Extra Lean Cured Ham – Nutritional Information
Item: Extra Lean Cured Ham
Category: Pork Products
Refuse: 0% (values below are for edible portion)
Serving size analysed: 140g, 1 cup
Intro: I’ve just been looking into what ham actually is and I didn’t realize that not only is it a cut of meat specifically from the thigh of the hind leg of a pig, but also that apparently it doesn’t have to be from a pig to be classed as ham! The details below are for pork ham though, and this is extra lean which means it is supposed to have very little fat in it. However as far as I am aware the guidelines for what constitutes ‘extra lean’ are that is must contain less than 5g of fat (I assume per 100g of product) and this does not fall within those guidelines.
You can see below this actually contains about 8% fat, or 8g per 100g, although the amount of saturated fat is relatively low at just 2.7%. Then it contains a lot of water (that makes up the bulk of the weight) along with a good deal of protein as well. You get a good selection of minerals which seems common with any meat, and while you don’t get many vitamins in this then it is quite high in Niacin (vitamin B3).
