Intro: Strangely while this is known as the English walnut it is also known as the Persian walnut too! The Juglans regia tree was actually native to Southwest China and areas of the Balkans, but it got the name ‘English walnut’ presumably because they used to be distributed mainly by English ships. This is just one species from the Juglans genus, there are actually 21 species in that genus and as far as I can tell they all produce the seed we call a walnut. I think most people have encountered walnuts in one form or another, they are popular additions to cakes, either ground up and added to the actual cake, or stuck on the top as decoration and added flavor.
Or of course you have buy them in their shells which is great for Christmas as they look good in a bowl and give you something to do while you are watching Christmas TV as you try to crack them open!
Nutritionally they are similar to all the other nuts we’ve looked at, with the second highest fat content just behind pine nuts, but the highest levels of saturated fat.
