Intro: I absolutely love pistachio nuts, they have a unique taste and while I prefer eating them raw then I do also like anything that has them in it, from desserts with pistachio mousse through to just granola bars with them in. The best thing about eating them raw though is that the ones I buy are always in the shell, which means you have to spend time getting each nuts out. That might not sound like a good thing, but if you check below you can see they contain quite a lot of calories (like most nuts) so having to take off the shell each time limits how quickly I can get through a pack of these!

The pistachio (Pistacia vera) is a small tree that was first cultivated in Western Asia, although due to its popularity it started to spread and can now be found in any country that can provide the desert-like conditions that it thrives in. Iran is apparently the biggest producer of this nut right now, with the USA a firm second. They are a typical nut in terms of nutrition though, they are high in fat and protein and contain a good range of vitamins and minerals, but are high in calories so enjoy them in moderation.
