Intro: Pine nuts make a lovely snack, although I find they start to have a weird aftertaste if you have too many of them in one go, so instead of buying packs of just these, get a bag of mixed seeds and nuts with these in to stop that from happening. These nuts are actually the edible seeds of pine trees, and according to Wikipedia then most species of pine trees produce edible seeds, although out of the 100+ species of these trees then only about 20 actually produce seeds big enough to make them worth harvesting and eating.

As I mentioned earlier you can eat these raw out of the packet (they actually start off in a shell on the tree, but when you buy them in packets they are always shelled) but they are also a great addition to salads and pretty much any meal that you want to add a bit more taste to. Apparently people in Europe and Asia have been eating these nuts since the Palaeolithic period.
