What Good Is Colon Cleansing?
It seems that everywhere you turn today, there are ads pushing colon cleansing. From emails and the Internet, to magazine ads and infomercials, the claims are astounding. All of these claims many leave you wondering: What good is colon cleansing?
Is colon cleansing safe? Should you do it? Is it really going to make you healthier and lose weight? The truth is, all of these questions are still being researched. Scientists and physicians have spent very little time studying the area of colon cleansing. What we do know is the process of colon cleansing dates back centuries, to the days of ancient Greece, and that it became popular again in the 1920s and 1930s. The process lost its attractiveness again when there was little documented support to back up the many claims of benefit; however, colon cleansing has recently begun a revival in popularity.
Today, there are two main cleansing methods: irrigation and product based. Irrigation, also referred to as a colonic, involves irrigating the colon using a machine that flushes your colon with up to twenty gallons of water. While lying on a table, the water is sent directly into the body, using varying temperatures and pressure. The water and waste is then flushed from the body using a separate tube. Some colonics may use special herbs, probiotics, coffee, or enzymes.
Product based cleansing methods include: herbal and natural based supplements, teas, powders, laxatives, and enemas. These products are taken by mouth (with the exception of enemas), and encourage the body to purge the contents of the colon.
The main idea behind colon cleansing is to help rid the body of unwanted toxins. It is thought that food products that are not completely digested (especially meat products) cause a buildup in the large intestine. Some believe this buildup could produce unwanted toxins that then circulate throughout the body. Headaches, fatigue, low energy levels, and weight gain have all been blamed on this theory. What is known is that constipation has an effect on the entire body, due in large part to the nervous system, not necessarily toxins. The colon contains many properties that naturally protect itself and the body, and probably does not need a great deal of maintenance. When considering a colon cleansing treatment, consider all the benefits, risks, and side effects. It may also be beneficial to speak with a professional, or a physician before undergoing any treatments.
