How To Get Rid of Cellulite
Oh the horrors of cellulite. Just the mere mention of the word makes women cringe. If you are one of the millions that dread warm weather just because of the thought of putting on shorts or a swimsuit, fear not! There are now ways to get rid of cellulite so you can show off your body with pride.
Cellulite is a condition that affects mostly women. While cellulite is most common with women over the age of 30, this unsightly annoyance has been seen in females as young as 14. It is begins as microscopic changes in the skin that are first invisible in the skin’s outward appearance. These changes later reveal themselves, first as minor dimples, often resembling an orange peel or cottage cheese, but then can develop over time to become quite unsightly. Contrary to what many people believe, cellulite is not a result of too much body fat. Cellulite is actually caused by weakened connective tissues and cells in the skin. As the skin ages, it becomes damaged due to hormones, environment, and dehydration. Cellulite starts to rear its ugly head when the skin has broken down to the point that fat cells, that are typically found just below the surface of the skin, push through to the middle layer of the skin (called the dermis) and start to show at the surface. While cellulite is harmless, it does cause many people to become very insecure and self-conscious.
Today, there seem to be endless products on the market that claim to reduce or eliminate cellulite. From lotions and creams, to liposuction and laser treatments, which ones really work? To get a better idea of how to answer this question, it is important to understand that the appearance of cellulite will only diminish if the dermal layer of the skin is repaired. This has nothing to do with reducing or burning fat (such as with exercise or liposuction). While a proper diet and regular exercise is always recommended and may tone the skin, which may lead to a reduced cellulite appearance, it will not eliminate the problem. Over the counter dietary supplements and topical creams claim to get rid of cellulite, sometimes in a matter of days or weeks. None of these products have had any of their claims substantiated by clinical research. There are some new procedures available, such as mechanical massage, that have shown good results. These treatments are done in the care of a physician or professional and often take several sessions before results are noticed. Follow up treatments of one to two sessions per month are also required. For best results, contact your physician or dermatologist for a personalized consultation. These professionals are best suited to assess your condition and recommend the proper treatments.
