Intro: Gin, a tasty spirit in a cocktail like a G&T, but I think it is foul by itself! Gin is a spirit which is flavoured using juniper berries, different makers add other things to subtly change the taste, like London Dry Gin will use dried orange peel and a whole variety of other peels and herbs when they are distilling the mixture to give it a unique flavour, but the main taste still will come from the juniper berries.

There are two different categories of gin, you have the good stuff which is distilled gin, where they re-distill a neutral spirit with the juniper berries and other things to get the end product, and then there is compound gin where basically some flavours are simply added to the neutral spirit.

The use of juniper berries to flavour gin seems to stem back to the belief that they had medicinal properties (I can’t find any evidence for that belief apart from them being a diuretic) so the drink was actually supposed to be medicinal, but nowadays it is just the unique taste that draws us to it.
