Intro: When you tuck into that juicy hamburger or hotdog, do you spare any thought for the bun? I know the main taste comes from the meat, but the roll you eat also piles on calories too. You get fat from the meat (we’ll look at hotdogs later in this series) and then you get simple carbs from the inevitably white bread roll it is wrapped in. However what most people don’t realise is that while the GI value of the roll might be high, which means the carbs will get into your bloodstream really fast, then as you are eating it with fatty meat, then that stops your body digesting the carbs as fast and so the glycemic load of the meal is much lower.

So if you have a choice out of just eating the roll or eating it with a hamburger or hotdog in, then you can use what I just said as an excuse to get the meat too!
