Intro: This one intrigued me, as I have heard of a banana cream pie before, but never had any, in fact I don’t think I have had any cream pie of any kind before. This looks like a basic cream pie (pie crust with a rich custard inside, topped with meringue) with a layer of banana slices added to the base of the crust to give it some extra flavour.

I have tried to look up how old this recipe is, but it is hard to get a definite date. There certainly seem to be mentions of it around the turn of the 20th century (1900′s) in cookbooks (albeit with slight differences compared to the modern recipe) but it may well have emerged much earlier than that.

In terms of nutrition then it is mostly water (about 50%) but other than that you get a good dose of carbs and fat from this – so make sure you stick to one slice!
