Intro: Good apple pie should be slightly sour in my opinion (which comes from the cooking apple if you don’t add sugar to them to disguise it), and then the sweetness can be added with custard or ice cream. Unfortunately most apple pies I have purchased from shops have been insanely sweet instead, so you get the sweetness from that and then from the custard or ice cream too. My nan used to make the best apple pie ever, and having it warm with vanilla ice cream was a real treat.

Apple pie is a popular and traditional dessert, and Wikipedia says there is evidence of these being made as far back as 1381! Of course it is a very simple double-crust pie stuffed with cooking apples, so for people back then who had some cooking apples to use then it would have been a simple solution to stick them in a pie.
