Intro: I had some Melba toast yesterday actually, although I like to eat it without any toppings. Melba toast is really thin and crisp toast, probably only an inch and half wide and 3 inches long. Usually people have a topping on it like cheese or pâté.

The name is believed to have been derived from Dame Nellie Melba (the stage name of Helen Mitchell a 19th century opera singer) who used to eat this all the time when she was ill.

It is made by lightly toasting some bread, then cutting that down the middle to make two thinner slices which are again toasted. Although the stuff we usually buy looks a lot more professional than that as literally all the moisture has been removed from it, so it is probably baked rather than ‘toasted’ in a toaster.

In terms of nutrition then there are no real surprises, it is bread afterall, so it is high in carbs, low in fat, with some protein and fiber in there too.
