Intro: Yesterday we spoke about butter cookies which are essentially shortbread, but today we are looking at the more traditional chocolate chip cookie. Not double choc chip mind, which is chocolate flavoured cookie with chocolate bits in it, this is just a normal cookie with chocolate bits in. The only difference I can see between the recipe for this one and the butter version is that this uses eggs, and two different kinds of sugar, everything else is the same (apart from the addition of chocolate!).
Apparently this cookie was first invented in 1933 when Ruth Wakefield (who ran an inn in Massachusetts) ran out of baking chocolate and tried to use normal chocolate from Nestlé instead, it didn’t melt like baking chocolate and the chocolate chip cookie was born! I am not sure if you can patent or protect a recipe, but she sold it to Nestlé in return for a lifetime supply of chocolate chips! If you look at the back of a pack of Nestlé chocolate chips now you will find a variation of the original recipe on it!
