Intro: Everyone loves chocolate brownies! These are little squares of chocolate cake that are denser than normal so they are like a cross between a cookie and a cake. This term applies to pretty much any flat square of chocolate cake nowadays though, and my personal preference is for a softer more juicy version, rather than the rock hard type you find around sometimes.
The chocolate brownie is believed to have first appeared in 1893 during the Columbian Exposition. Apparently Bertha Palmer (a powerful American businesswoman) asked for a dessert to be made for the ladies attending that event that was smaller than a usual slice of cake and easy to carry around and eat out of a box. A chef at the Palmer House Hotel then came up with a brownie with an apricot glaze and walnuts on (yuk!).
It was about 1904 before the brownie as we know it appeared as a recipe people could copy, in the book ‘Home Cookery’ which was published that year. Now everyone has their own twist on the original concept and recipe, but they are all delicious in their own way.
