What Do You Diet When Your Family Wants To Eat Junk?
Congratulations! You have decided to start eating better, exercising more, and really stick to your diet plan. Your family is all for supporting you in your new lifestyle, however they have no desire to eat healthier, so the junk is still everywhere throughout the house. This has probably left you wondering: how do you diet when your family wants to eat junk?
You first need to develop a strategy to deal with all those sneaky little temptations filling your pantry. You cannot really deprive your entire family of their favorite treats, but you can encourage them to eat healthier as well. You can begin to slowly introduce healthier versions of your family’s snacks, and you can change the way you prepare family dinners. Do not allow fried foods. Offer baked chips, rather than greasy fried chips, avoid fast food, and prepare baked, or broiled dinner options.
You should also try to take the focus off the actual food. If you and your family usually gather around the television at night with your bowls of ice cream, redirect the focus. Start the process of getting everyone to understand that you can still bond and enjoy each other’s company, but without having to consume junk food. Try playing a game together, rather than just sitting and eating.
In addition to trying to encourage your family to start eating healthier and refocus their attention with you, you need to understand that you may not get their immediate support. This means you may need to seek support in other areas. Remember, just because you want to change your life, does not mean your family wants to change theirs. Do not become upset or discouraged when your spouse says he will not give up his cookies, and he does not want to go for a walk with you in the evening. This is his right, and you cannot force him. Try to find someone else who shares goals similar to yours. Do you have a friend or a neighbor who is also trying to lose weight and get healthy? Take daily walks with that person, or join a fitness class with that person. You may not know anyone personally, so you may need to consider joining a gym, a workout program, or even hire a personal trainer.
Finally, do not make a fuss over the fact that your family still wants their junk. You need to be the strong one and you need to learn how to handle cravings and temptation. After all, you cannot make the entire world swear off junk; you are going to encounter it everywhere. The key to true diet success is to develop will power, set reasonable goals and milestones, and stick to your program. If no one wants to follow you, that is their prerogative. You will be fit, healthy, and satisfied, and that is what you set out to do.
