Are you one of the thousands of people that insist they simply do not have time to exercise? Do you feel as though you just have absolutely no way to work some activity into your hectic schedule? Exercise does not have to be a chore. You do not have to spend hours working out at the gym, or performing countless reps on fitness machines. There are some really simple ways to get more exercise everyday without disrupting your routine. Here are five tips to get you started.

1. When running errands, park as far away from the stores as possible. Rather than fighting over the spot closest to the door, park a good distance away. These extra steps really make a big difference. Try power walking to the stores rather than walking slowly. You will be amazed at how many calories you can burn.

2. Rather than automatically hopping into the elevator, take the stairs. Standing in a box, being carried from floor to floor gets you absolutely no exercise. The act of climbing the stairs raises your heart rate, and gives your leg muscles a good workout. If you do not feel you can climb all of the stairs to get to your destination, climb a flight or two and then take the elevator. You will still get some exercise and you may even find you are able to climb more stairs with time.

3. Get up and take a walk when you have some extra time at work. Going for a short walk during your coffee break, your lunch break, or while waiting for a meeting can be a great way to get some exercise. You can even try using a bathroom on a different floor so that you have to get a bit of a walk. Taking even a short walk not only gets you some activity, it also helps to reduce stress.

4. Housework can be a great form of exercise. The act of vacuuming uses your arms, your back, and your abdominal muscles. You can wear some light weights on your wrists or ankles to further the benefits of these movements. You can also wear high heels when vacuuming, which really works those glutes! In addition to vacuuming, scrubbing the tile, weeding the garden, mowing the lawn, and raking the leaves provide great workouts for the whole body.

5. Take some time and play with your kids in the backyard. A quick game of “hide and seek”, kickball, or even tag is a great way to get moving and burn that extra fat and calories. Your kids will also get some activity and enjoy the attention you provide. Exercise does not have to be something you dread. Make your activity fun and you will not even realize you are working out!
