What is Chirunning?

Chirunning, is a specialized method of running that was developed by American Ultramarathon runner and Tai Chi enthusiast, Danny Dreyer. The purpose of this method is to teach runners how to move in a more natural, more efficient manner.

Chirunning is not based upon traditional running instruction that works to focus on power and strength training in a way that pushes the runner as fast as possible, for the longest period of time. Instead, chirunning is centered on efficiency and relaxation, with the emphasis placed on form, not conditioning or speed.

This method is touted as being one of the most beneficial workouts for both running beginners and long distance runners. It was developed to make the process of running less painful, and much more natural than other types of workout plans. Chirunning teaches the individual to approach the process of running from the mind, such as is practiced in yoga or Tai Chi. Runners should become “one with the road” and feel at peace, not focused on times and distances.

Many runners that have suffered injuries find they are once again able to return to the sport by using the techniques set forth with chirunning. There have also been recent scientific studies completed that have shown runners that begin by using chirunning methods have a much lower injury risk.

To better understand how chirunning is different from conventional methods, you must first understand the exact technique. Chirunning begins with a series of body loosening exercises, similar to that of Qi Gong. The body is gently stretched and aligned in a vertical column. From this point, the runner must learn to run while leaning forward, so that he or she is pulled naturally by gravity. The strike of the foot occurs at the mid-foot point, and the stride is opened out the back. Arm swing needs to be minimized so that arms never cross the center point of the runner’s body. A set pace (often referred to as a cadence) should be established for the run, and a metronome is a great tool to help with this. The only way to speed up the run is through stride length, not through cadence. The entire body should be relaxed throughout the process, especially the lower extremities, and the body’s form must stay aligned in a column at all times.

Many individuals who were never fans of running before have found chirunning to be quite enjoyable and beneficial. This method helps to get the body and the mind into shape, while creating an overall peaceful disposition.
