Tips to Convince Your Family to Eat Healthily too

Eating better is a great way to get healthy, lose weight, and improve your overall well being. Eating well is not a fleeting trend, or something you can do every now and then. Making the commitment to get healthy is something you need to be serious about for the long run; your changes need to be permanent. Many people find this would be a lot easier to do if their family would just eat healthy too. So is this possible? Can you convince your entire family to start to eat healthily? The answer is yes! It may take some time to do (give it at least a month or so) but it definitely can be done. Here are some great tips to help get you on your way.

1. Start by making small changes, gradually. You should only try to take on one healthy eating habit at a time. If you empty the cupboards of everything your family loves, tell them they can never have their favorites ever again, and only keep bean sprouts and veggies in the fridge, your family is going to be more than a little distraught. Start with something small and work your way up from there. For example, get rid of prepackaged cookies. If you do not keep processed foods such as this in the house, they cannot be eaten. Instead, make your own healthy cookies so that you control the fat and sugar content. Once your family gets into the habit of eating healthier versions, they will no longer want the old unhealthy foods.

2. Learn to appreciate fresh, wholesome foods. When you are used to eating high fat, high calorie, sugary, and salty foods, foods that are actually good for you taste pretty bland. You need to reintroduce your family to fresh food. Buy local foods that are in season. Encourage your family to eat these foods and to really taste the tartness of a crisp apple in the fall, or the sweetness of strawberries in the spring. Once they begin to enjoy these foods again, you will find they are less apt to eat prepackaged and processed foods. The more fresh foods they consume, the more they will find their bodies will actually begin to reject other types of foods. Fatty snacks will no longer be craved, greasy foods will create a sick feeling, and sugary foods will no longer be enjoyed.

3. Monitor portion sizes. The biggest problem people have is keeping portions under control. No matter what you serve your family, eating too much is simply not healthy. Be conscious about how much food is really going on the plate, and try to make up everyone’s plate in the kitchen. Start off with smaller than normal amounts of most foods, but a few extra veggies. Place the plates on the table, and let your family know they can have seconds if they are still hungry. You will notice with time that your family will eat less, eat more vegetables, and overall have healthier eating habits.
