What is the ECA Stack?

The ECA stack is a specific drug combination that is used for stimulant and weight loss purposes. ECA is an abbreviation for the make up of the combination: Ephedrine, Caffeine, and Aspirin. Supplements containing ECA became quite popular in the 1990s when the diet industry began touting the many benefits of Ephedra for weight loss. This led to a boom in product sales, but problems quickly arose when many reports of stroke, heart attack, and even death began to surface. This led to many countries including Canada, the United States, and the European Union banning certain aspects of the drug combination.

There have been many studies looking into both the claims and the risks involved with the ECA stack. These studies found that while the combination may indeed promote weight loss, there was substantial risk to the heart. Not only has the combination been shown to be particularly dangerous for individuals with pre-existing heart conditions (such as heart disease, or heart valve problems), it also has been shown to cause heart attacks, heart damage, stroke, and even death in otherwise healthy young adults. These cases were noted in people that took the dosage recommended on the package, and did not overdose.

The onslaught of patient claims, medical study findings, and media attention led to further clinical trails. In 2003, a new analysis was completed on all of the previously conducted studies. This analysis found that supplements containing ephedrine or ephedra could be linked to a two to three times increase in developing heart issues, heart palpitations, gastrointestinal problems, and even psychiatric conditions.

As of 2004, ephedra, a botanical form of ephedrine, was completely banned in the United States. The U.S. also prohibited all marketing of ephedra-based products for dietary supplement purposes. That being said, ephedrine itself is not and never has been illegal in the U.S., and is still available over the counter though many states regulate distribution. Canada issued a recall of all products containing this ingredient in 2002, and many other countries around the world have taken steps to regulate the production of products containing the ECA stack components. The European Union has currently made all ephedrine and ephedra based supplements completely illegal, however ephedrine is still available by prescription only. In addition to the health related issues, ephedrine has also been widely used as a main ingredient in the methamphetamine drug-manufacturing world. Because of this, many countries further regulate how much ephedrine can be purchased by one person, and how often.
